1981 Renault R5 Turbo
Im so appalled by that Revere thing, I needed something to take my mind off it. Enter the Renault R5 Turbo, geezer heaven.
Talk about hot hatches, this thing is on fire !!Produced by the French in the 80’s, this car was initially designed for rally, but also came in a road going-ish version. This beast has a mid-mounted 1397cc turbocharged engine, slotted behind the drivers seat, mainly for a comfortable ride…
The rally versions like this one got crazy horsepower from that little engine, some up to as much as 350Hp !! Shhheat. Obviously they had a load of work to get there, mostly stronger internals and a better lung set up for the turbo.
Driven by Jean Ragnotti the R5 Turbo won the Monte Carlo Rally on its first outing in the World Rally Championship. It had a raft of success through the 80’s, but the 2WD setup proved tricky compared to the newer 4WD systems that became popular. 7/10 gets the R5 Turbo, it would be a hell of a lot of fun to drive, but god awful loud and where do i put my groceries ?
