1981 Renault R5 Turbo

Im so appalled by that Revere thing, I needed something to take my mind off it. Enter the Renault R5 Turbo, geezer heaven.

renault-r5-turbo1renultr5turbo2Talk about hot hatches, this thing is on fire !!Produced by the French in the 80’s, this car was initially designed for rally, but also came in a road going-ish version. This beast has a mid-mounted 1397cc turbocharged engine, slotted behind the drivers seat, mainly for a comfortable ride…

The rally versions like this one got crazy horsepower from that little engine, some up to as much as 350Hp !! Shhheat. Obviously they had a load of work to get there, mostly stronger internals and a better lung set up for the turbo.renultr5turbo4
Driven by Jean Ragnotti the R5 Turbo won the Monte Carlo Rally on its first outing in the World Rally Championship.  It had a raft of success through the 80’s, but the 2WD setup proved tricky compared to the newer 4WD systems that became popular. 7/10 gets the R5 Turbo, it would be a hell of a lot of fun to drive, but god awful loud and where do i put my groceries ?
